Oseledets
Description:
The course is a general introduction to machine learning (ML) and its applications. It covers fundamental modern topics in ML, and describes the most important theoretical basis and tools necessary to investigate properties of algorithms and justify their usage. It also provides important aspects of the algorithms applications, illustrated using real-world problems. The course starts with an overview of canonical ML applications and problems, learning scenarios, etc. and introduction into theoretical foundations of ML. We present the most novel theoretical tools and concepts trying to be as succinct as possible. Then we discuss in depth fundamental ML algorithms for classification, regression, boosting, etc., their properties as well as their practical applications. The last part of the course is devoted to advanced ML topics such that metric learning, kernel mean embedding of distributions, anomaly detection, reinforcement learning, etc. Within practical sections, we show how to use the methods above to crack various real-world problems. Home assignments include application of existing algorithms to solve applied industrial problems, development of modifications of ML algorithms, as well as some theoretical exercises. The students are assumed to be familiar with basic concepts in linear algebra, probability and real analysis. The success and even feasibility of conducting many modern industrial and scientific projects in a variety of domains is increasingly dependent on a correct analysis of the collected information. Therefore, nowadays almost every specialist should have an idea of the opportunities and limitations that arise when using the existing arsenal of methods and tools for Data Mining. The objective of the course is precisely to create the student’s understanding of the analytical activity and the corresponding mathematical theory. The main classes of problems of machine learning and methods for their solution are considered. Advances in this area will give us an opportunity to improve network performance by more efficient use of available resources and optimize network operation for specific applications . Such an optimization is often of fundamental importance because it can yield a competitive advantage. For example, it may be useful in the organization of cloud computing, in live streaming with content delivery networks, in building interactive online services and games, in consolidation of sensors and actuators which form the basis of IOT.
Our laboratory is working in several areas of adaptive communication:

Adaptive configuration of network applications and switching equipment. The idea of this area is to automate assignment of configurable network parameters of the network, as derived from the current state of the network environment. Laboratory staff has accumulated extensive experience in working with multipath transport connections, which distribute the data to several routes through the network. The original development of the laboratory is the FDMP Protocol, which provides a predetermined quality of network connections by the built-in mechanisms of changing the number of routes involved by them and redistribution of these routes over the network topology.

Network protocols with configurable semantics. Modern network applications and services de facto are based on two main protocols: UDP, which is simple but unreliable, and TCP, which is reliable but not transparent. However, the abstractions and interfaces offered by these protocols are not well suited for all tasks which appear in practice. Research in this area suggests increasing connection performance by increasing flexibility of interfaces and services, which are provided by transport protocol, and adjusting these interfaces depending on the requirements of a particular distributed application.

Programmable packet processing. Inside this issue our laboratory is working on building lightweight methods of processing network traffic packets, inter-layer optimization of the network stack, expanding the functionality of network equipment. One of the most urgent tasks of this topic is the development of proxy servers suitable for splitting long transport connections into sequences of shorter connections in order to optimize them for the correspondent network segments.

The specificity of the research in the field of adaptive communications is in close intersection of network engineering and software engineering, since networks are moving away from proprietary devices with fixed functionality and are moving towards open, programmable interfaces, and formal mathematical approach. The Laboratory provides its students have an opportunity to work with modern equipment (powerful servers, fiber optic lines, high-performance switches), to enhance programming skills (distributed architecture, network stack, Linux kernel), and to apply their mathematical knowledge in practice.

More info

Cloud computing building and management technologies

Network Functions Virtualization (NFV) is the concept of separation of network node function from hardware which implements it, using virtualization technology. NFV allows software-based deployment and management of network functions on a standart data center’s hardware through the virtualization of physical resources (computing, network and storage). This ensures independence of the network service logic from the hardware on which it operates. The “Virtual Network Function” (VNF) engineering depends on the goals for which the virtualization infrastructure of network functions is built, on who builds this infrastructure and for what. Examples of NFV are services for the network traffic analysis, management and engineering. The sample of a virtual network function for telecom operators is a software that provides the functionality of appliance for a traffic switching, routing, filtering, balancing, etc. Other examples might be Voice over IP, video conference, EPC, billing, DPI (Deep Package Inspection), traffic engineering and monitoring, and the like.
Advantages of the NFV concept are the possibilities of dynamic scaling, automatic configuration of virtual network functions, efficient use of physical resources and their redistribution.
This research area covers a wide range of issues related to the cloud infrastructures organization:

Virtual function’s life cycle maintenance in the cloud infrastructure;

Tools development for creating and editing of virtual functions;

Validation and verification of virtual functions software;

Planning of the cloud infrastructure resources according to the VNF orchestration policy;

Integration of real-time monitoring systems for the implementation of VNF orchestration policy;

Development of management algorithms for distributed cloud environments;

Development of algorithms for synchronizing the state of resources between components of a distributed cloud;

Building of a blockchain-based chargeback system for distributed cloud environments;

Development of a micro-service cloud platform architecture based on lightweight virtualization;

Development of Dark Data Analysis systems for analysis of cloud monitoring logs data in order to form a recommendation for the cloud operator (Self-Service Analytics);

High-Performance Computing as a Service development (HPCaaS);

Development of a system for automatic deployment of cloud software on a high performance infrastructure (HPC Cloud).

The main research directions in the NFV area are as follows:

Development and implementation of the interdomain interaction management system in a distributed NFV platform. The goal is to organize cloud’s components interaction in a distributed NFV platform;

Verification and validation algorithms for virtual network functions. The research’s aim is in developing methods and tools that allow to accelerate, simplify and make more secure the process of network functions transfer to the NFV platform;

Efficient use of physical resources by lightweight containers in cloud systems. The aim is to build a monitoring system that allows efficient planning and replanning (in the case of migration) of the containers’ location in the cloud.

Publications:
Antonenko V.A., Mikheev P.A.
